Dorm Essentials - A Complete "Must-Have" List of Necessities
All stressed Out? Haven't a clue what dorm essentials are required? Too much information? Not enough answers?................... JUST RELAX!!
First things first!
By now you've probably been in touch with your new roommate via the internet or phone. You've had the pleasure of exchanging lots of information as well as sharing your likes and dislikes. You may have even put your request in for which side of the room you'd like to occupy (maybe the side closest to the window).
Some colleges provide dorm essentials like refrigerators and microwaves. These items we deem a necessity. Make sure to double check if your college provides them. If they don't, will they allow them in your dorm room?
If these large ticket items are allowed, this is something that may be split between all the roommates. This way buying doubles can be eliminated, and no one is responsible for making ALL the purchases themselves.

Aside from the basic necessities that the college provides, such as a twin bed, a desk and a closet with some shelves, here are some true dorm essentials that will make it easier to adjust to your new “home away from home”. Do keep in mind that you MAY be dealing with only a 9 X 12 space.
Got a pen?
Mini fridge: Check with your college to see if these are provided or even allowed. You might want to consider one with a lock to keep moochers out. It's up to you. If you don't like the lock idea, then you may want to make a list of easy to follow rules. Have each roommate alternate weekly to purchase groceries. A master list should be made and agreed upon so everyone's favorites yummies are included.
Laptop or Desktop Computer: Don’t forget the printer!
Microwave: Check with your college to see if these are provided or even allowed.
TV/DVD Player: Can’t forget entertainment!
Electric Hot Pot: Check with your college to see if these are allowed. If you can boil water you can make a cup of hot cocoa, tea, instant coffee, soups. Your options are endless.
Fan: A true necessity! Confined areas can harbor unpleasant odors to say the least. It can also be used to create white noise to block out whatever is disturbing you.
Reading Light: Get one that adjusts so you can hover over your books without bothering your roommate should you need to do some late night studying.
Alarm Clock: An absolute dorm essential. Remember, Mom won’t be there to wake you up. You’re on your own!
Room Phone and Answering Machine: Got to keep in touch!
Linens: Make sure you find out what size bed your dorm room has, as every college and dorm room is different. Purchase linens accordingly. Don’t forget about blankets, a comforter and big pillows to make those endless hours of reading in bed comfortable.
Storage Space: Since storage space is at a minimum, you may want to bring cinder blocks to raise the bed to provide extra storage underneath. Then you can purchase those under storage containers to fit your necessities in. Also consider the over the door pocket storage which can be hung in the closet and behind doors.
Full Length Mirror: It cures that “rolled out of bed look”. Can't you hear mom’s voice in your head saying, "Comb your hair!"
If you’re one to decorate, you must not forget about window treatments, rugs and memo boards (Don't leave home without them).
